Safety Message from the Irving Fire Department: Thanksgiving Safety

As you prepare to welcome guest for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, the Irving Fire Department wants everyone to be safe, be careful in the kitchen when cooking this holiday season. To reduce the risk of cooking fires this holiday, the Irving Fire Department recommends the following safetytips:

Turkey Fryer Safety:  always use turkey fryers outdoors, never place on wooden patio or in garage, always place on a flat surface, never leave unattended.

Cooking Safety:  watch what you heat, stay alert, keep things that can catch fire away from heat, install and use cooking appliances safely, have working smoke alarms, know what to do if you have a cooking fire.

If you have a cooking fire: Just get out! When you leave, close the door behind you to help contain the fire. Call 9-1-1 after you leave. Keep a lid nearby when cooking to smother small grease fires. Smother the fire by sliding the lid over the pan and turn off the stovetop.  Leave the pan covered until it is completely cooled. For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed.
