Fall Carnival Series: Children of all ages are invited to the Irving Parks and Recreation Department’s Fall Carnival Series. The fall carnivals will be held at various recreation centers (see below). Tickets are 25 cents each or five for $1. Activities will vary by location and could include carnival games, prizes, cakewalks, bounce houses and concessions. Canal Fest 2014: The beautiful Mandalay Canal in the Las Colinas Urban District will be the backdrop for Canal Fest 2014. The event will feature local art exhibits, live music, international cuisine, multicultural dancers and family-friendly activities. Plus, attendees have the opportunity to win a trip for two to Amsterdam to enjoy the sights and sounds of the original Canal Fest. The event will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Oct. 25, at 200 E. Big Read 2014 Events: The Irving Public Library is celebrating its ninth annual community reading event, The Big Read, with several community events. A full list can be found at cityofirving.org/library.
- Mockingbirds, Justice and Race – A Conversation: 7 p.m. Oct. 23, Central Library, 801 W. Irving Blvd. The Irving Heritage Society is collaborating with the Irving Public Library to host a panel discussion this year’s Big Read novel selection. The panel will include English instructors from the Jack E. Singley Academy, MacArthur High School and the University of Texas at Arlington.
Irving Arts Center Hosts “Peruvian Gold: Ancient Treasures Unearthed”: Irving is one of two cities in the nation hosting Peruvian Gold, an exhibit showcasing collection of ancient artifacts excavated from Peru’s legendary royal tombs. The exhibit features pieces that have never before been shown in the U.S. and it is presented in partnership with the National Geographic Museum in Washington D.C. Peruvian Gold is showing at the Irving Arts Center, 3333 N. MacArthur Blvd., through Dec. 31. Tickets are $12 for adults, $8 for seniors, students and military members.
