FCCLA Members Become Peer Educators

Several Jack E. Singley Academy students presented on various topics at a FCCLA (Family, Career and Counseling Leaders of America) training October 4 and 5 at the Omni Dallas Hotel.

After making the presentations, the students earned the title of "peer educator." They returned from the training charged with collaborating with local school and community resources, conducting local action projects and tracking results.

More information about topics covered and the students who presented them follows:

  • STOP (Students Taking on Prevention) the Violence - peer-to-peer outreach initiative empowers young people to recognize, report and reduce the potential for youth violence. Senior Barbara Rangel; sophomores Pamela Obregon and Veronica Zamarripa; and freshman Luis Perez
  • Financial Fitness - teaching others to save for their future and about the frauds that affect families. Senior Andrea Garcia; sophomores Katherine Bonilla and Hope Cachay; freshman Karina Chavarria
  • Childhood Obesity - helping fight the epidemic of the overweight population in our state. Junior Aaron Rico; sophomores Stephanie Guerrero and Abelardo Villegas; freshman Juan Altamirano
  • Civic Engagement - emphasizing the importance of becoming involved in their communities and being involved in the decision-making process. Sophomores Maya Carter, Vanessa Farjado and Victoria Martinez; freshman Johathan Villatoro
  • Teen Safe Driving - educating teens and their parents about the importance of teen safe driving and the consequences of distracted driving. Juniors Linda Nguyen and Adriana Lopez; sophomore Michael Stromile
