The Irving ISD food and nutrition department selected to showcase best practices at national conference

Irving ISD’s Food and Nutrition Department has been selected to showcase their innovative “outside the cafeteria” program at the annual School Nutrition Conference in San Antonio next week.  The outside the cafeteria program began in 2002 with breakfast in the classroom with the use of food carts sent to each elementary school classroom.

In 2014, hallway buffet carts were introduced at the elementary schools to help streamline kitchen operations and reduce food cost.

The success from the elementary schools program expanded to a grab-and-go model at the middle schools. Carts are deployed for students who attend early tutoring or athletic programs or who want an alternative to the traditional cafeteria hot breakfast.

“The evolution of the carts has proven to be a conduit for our department to reach our students, provide accessible nutritious meals and support efforts to improve students’ academic performance,” says Michael Rosenberger, director of food and nutrition services. “We are pleased to share our success with conference attendees!”
