IISD May-June 2017 Calendar

AVID End-of-Year Celebration – Tuesday, May 16

Irving ISD will celebrate the success and accomplishments of the more than 2,400 AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) students at an End-of-Year Celebration and Senior Recognition on Tuesday, May 16, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the Irving High School auditorium. All AVID students in grades 8, 11 and 12 will celebrate a successful year in AVID, and special recognition will be given to graduating AVID seniors. Featured speaker will be Irving High AVID senior Alejandra Parra, and Irving ISD Superintendent of Schools Jose L. Parra, Ed.D., will make opening remarks.

4th Annual Independent English District-Wide Debate – Wednesday, May 17

Irving ISD Department of World Languages will host its 4th annual Independent English District-Wide Debate on Wednesday, May 17, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Nimitz High School, 100 W. Oakdale. The debate will feature English language learners from Irving, MacArthur and Nimitz high schools.

Alcohol & Drug Trends Workshop – May 22, 23, 25

Irving ISD is committed to providing parents and families with information on alcohol and drug trends. Please join the discussion at the Alcohol and Drug Awareness Workshops, to be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. as follows:

  • Monday, May 22, at MacArthur High School for students in the MacArthur cluster;
  • Tuesday, May 23, at Nimitz High School for students in the Nimitz cluster; and
  • Thursday, May 25, at Johnson Middle School for students in the Irving cluster.

Parents of students at Singley Academy and Cardwell Career Preparatory Center can attend the event of their choice. These town hall meetings will include information on alcohol and drug trends, if your child is hiding drugs in his/her bedroom and Family Advocacy Center support. Students are welcome to attend.

Irving Reads (10@10) – Friday, May 26

Irving ISD presents 10@10, a time when all students and staff read for 10 minutes at 10 a.m.  The 10@10 initiative will be held on Friday, May 26. It is part of the Irving READS! program, which provides free books to students, encouraging their love of learning and love of reading during the summer. Several years ago, Irving ISD set a goal to put 1 million books into the hands of its students.

Student Holiday – May 29

Monday, May 29, has been designated a student holiday for Irving ISD in observance of Memorial Day. All schools and district administrative offices will be closed. 

ISF Alumni Mixer – Thursday, June 1

Calling Irving ISD Alumni! The Irving Schools Foundation is hosting an Alumni Mixer onThursday, June 1, at NYLO Irving/Las Colina (1001 W. Royal Lane, Irving, TX 75039) from 6 to 8 p.m. There will be complimentary refreshments and door prizes. RSVP here.

Graduation – Friday, June 2, and Saturday, June 3

Irving ISD commencement ceremonies will be held over the span of two days this year. All ceremonies will be held at the Potter’s House, 6777 Kiest Blvd. in Dallas. The 2017 schedule is as follows:

  • Friday, June 2, 2017
    • Nimitz High School – 2 p.m.
    • Singley Academy – 8 p.m.
  • Saturday, June 3, 2017
    • MacArthur High School – 9 a.m.
    • Irving High School – 3 p.m.

Adult English Literacy Summer Academy Registration – June 5

Irving ISD will host a free Adult Summer Academy during the month of June. Classes will meet Monday-Thursday, June 5-29 from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Irving ISD Administrative Annex (820 N. O’Connor Road, Irving, TX 75061). Topics include family literacy, ESL, GED basic literacy skills, citizenship and civics lessons, entrepreneurship, computer literacy and conversations. Register in person at the Administrative Annex on the first day of class. Please bring a government-issued form of identification (social security card, driver’s license, birth certificate, passport, Texas ID, residency card). For more information, call 972-600-3770.
