Scholars Compete in 4th Annual Independent English Debate

For the third consecutive year, English Language Learner (ELL) students from Nimitz High School debated their way to the top of the 4th annual Independent English District-Wide Debate heldWednesday. ELL students who have been in the country 12 months or less and are still learning the English language debated what they feel is the greatest challenge graduating immigrants face today.

In the first round, teams from Irving, MacArthur and Nimitz high schools presented their problem with two examples. The Irving team argued the challenges surrounding a lack of education, while MacArthur’s team spoke to challenges due to a lack of support, and the team from Nimitz presented the challenge of adapting to a new culture. Afterwards, students pitched data with explanations, followed by a presentation of their solutions. In the final rounds, speakers gave their rebuttals and closing arguments.

The teams presented before a panel of judges, including special guest judge Sonia Sala from Univision. Teams were judged on the messages and supporting evidence presented, as well as their personal impression and language skills. MacArthur’s team placed second, and the Irving team came in third.
