Irving ISD Board of Trustees Approves Measures to Address Enrollment and Budget Concerns

In its regular meeting on December 18, the Irving Independent School District (ISD) Board of Trustees voted to approve three measures aimed at rebalancing enrollment, preventing a potential budget shortfall, and addressing declining enrollment trends across the district.

Starting from the 2024-2025 school year, Britain Elementary School and Elliott Elementary School will be closed, with students rezoned into Schulze, John Haley, Townley, and Stipes Elementary Schools. Adjustments to the boundaries of John Haley and Lively Elementary Schools will also be made to accommodate the increase in student population.

In the 2025-2026 school year, de Zavala Middle School will be designated as a School of Opportunity, similar to existing high school choice programs. Students will need to apply to attend, and the school will not be closing. Students currently zoned for de Zavala will be rezoned into neighboring schools, with additional rezoning changes proposed for Johnson, Crockett, Lamar, and Bowie Middle Schools to better align with high school feeder patterns.

These decisions, presented by district administration after thorough discussions and public hearings, were initiated following a motion at the September 18 Board meeting to explore adjustments to elementary and middle school boundaries. The motion, approved by the Board of Trustees, aimed to present the information to the community and stakeholders.

The district acknowledges the significant impact of these changes but emphasizes its commitment to providing the best education for students and ensuring responsible stewardship of tax dollars. The resolutions aim to strengthen the district both academically and financially.

The district has created a Boundary Changes webpage where presentations, maps, a timeline, frequently asked questions and other related information are housed. View the webpage at IrvingISD.net/BoundaryChanges.
