Nimitz High School Floral Design Students Head to Rose Bowl Parade for Once-in-a-Lifetime Opportunity

Nine Nimitz High School students are set to showcase their talents on a national stage as they contribute to the renowned Rose Bowl parade in Pasadena, California, on New Year's Day.

Eight students enrolled in the Floral Design class, accompanied by their teachers, will travel to California over the holiday break to participate in the creation of floats featured in the widely televised parade.

“It’s a really cool opportunity,” says senior Ximena Victoria. “Not only to get to work on something so famous, but also for some people, it’s the first time traveling to California or another state.”

Floral Design Teacher Rebecca Valdovinos, a California native, notes the rarity of out-of-state groups, particularly school groups, participating in the parade preparations. Typically, local groups such as Girl Scouts troops, church groups, and women's groups take part.

“It’s about 50 groups, typically local Girl Scouts troops, church groups and women’s groups,” said Valdovinos. “This is a very unique opportunity for experiential learning outside the classroom for my students. They will have the chance to explore the floral industry and enhance their understanding of the subjects they study to encourage personal growth and independence.”

The students, unaware of the specific float assignment until their arrival, are thrilled to collaborate with Artistic Enterprises in the hopes of contributing to an award-winning float.

Senior Jamie Medina expresses her excitement about the prospect of witnessing the finished floats in the parade, knowing that their team played a vital role in their creation.

As the students prepare for the trip, they express gratitude to district leaders and instructors who made the opportunity possible.

“When Ms. Val told us about it, of course I was excited to go,” says senior Melissa Cruz. “But then I thought, ‘Does it mean I have to pay a fee? Do I have to pay a fee?’ I was willing to! I was ready to start planning fundraisers. Fortunately, the district agreed to pay for it all. I’m so grateful. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Things like this don’t come all the time.”
