Pursuit Ends in Deadly Shooting, Involving Richardson Police and Suspected Homicide Suspect

On September 16, 2024, at 3:35 p.m., a Richardson Fire Department arson investigator, a sworn peace officer, alerted the Richardson Police Department after spotting a vehicle linked to a homicide in Kaufman County. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle in the 500 block of Centennial Boulevard in Richardson, but the driver accelerated, leading to a high-speed chase into Dallas.

During the pursuit, the driver fired at Richardson Police officers from the moving vehicle near the 13600 block of Esperanza Drive in Dallas. One Richardson officer returned fire. The vehicle eventually stopped on the southbound Frontage Road of the 13100 block of North Central Expressway in Dallas.

Officers found three passengers—ages 5, 15, and 17—in the backseat. All exited the vehicle physically unharmed. Utilizing a drone and ballistic shields, officers safely approached the vehicle and discovered the male driver with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The female front passenger had multiple gunshot wounds, later determined to have been inflicted by the driver.

Richardson police officers and the arson investigator provided emergency medical assistance at the scene. Dallas Fire Rescue arrived and pronounced the male driver deceased. The female passenger was transported to Medical City of Dallas in critical condition. The Richardson officer involved in the shooting was not injured.

The Dallas Police Department is leading the criminal investigation, with assistance from the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office. In accordance with Richardson Police Department policy, the officer has been placed on administrative leave.
