Temple Officer-Involved Shooting Leaves 20-Year-Old Man Injured After Welfare Check

The Temple Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, in the 400 block of Kasberg Drive. Officers were dispatched at approximately 8:38 a.m. in response to a welfare call concerning a 20-year-old man who was reportedly slurring his speech.

When the responding officer arrived and made contact with the individual, a brief dialogue occurred between the subject, EMS personnel, and the officer. During the interaction, the individual fled the residence and ran east toward Pepper Creek Trail. The officer attempted to detain the man for the welfare concern, but the individual resisted, leading to an altercation.

A police supervisor, monitoring the officer's AXON body camera feed, reported hearing the altercation, the subject issuing death threats, gunshots, and the officer calling out "shots fired." The officer also reported that the individual had been choking him during the struggle. Despite the confrontation, the officer was able to subdue the subject and take him into custody.

The 20-year-old sustained at least one gunshot wound to his upper left torso and was transported to the hospital, where he is listed in stable condition. The officer involved was also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is in stable condition.

The Texas Rangers have been called to investigate the incident, and the officer has been placed on administrative leave with pay, following standard procedure. Authorities have confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public.
