Irving Firefighters Honored for Heroic Double Rescue Amid Intense Structure Fire

Fire Chief Victor Conley, Joey Eager, Craig Coulter, Anthony Kennedy and Jace Allen

On September 18, 2024, the Irving Fire Department recognized four firefighters for their heroic actions during a life-threatening double rescue in a structure fire that occurred on July 5, 2024. FEO Joey Eager, FF Anthony Kennedy, and FF Craig Coulter were awarded the Medal of Valor and Lifesaving Award, while FEO Jace Allen received the Medal of Commendation for their roles in the incident.

The fire broke out in the early morning hours, shortly before 6:30 a.m., at a residence in the 1200 block of Belew Street. Engine 3 (E3) was dispatched to the scene after reports were received of occupants still inside the burning home. When E3 arrived, heavy smoke and flames were already visible at the front of the structure, raising the urgency of the situation.

Upon arrival, FEO Allen, the Engine’s driver, quickly secured a water supply while FF Kennedy deployed the hose line. Meanwhile, FEO Eager, acting as the engine officer, and FF Coulter, an additional firefighter, entered the burning structure to begin the search for trapped occupants.

Inside, Eager and Coulter quickly located the first occupant and successfully removed them from the fire-engulfed home. Without hesitation, the two firefighters re-entered the structure with the hose line to continue the search for any other victims and initiate an interior attack on the flames.

As they advanced deeper into the building, Eager and Coulter located a second occupant, but the fire rapidly intensified, cutting off their primary exit. With the flames closing in behind them, the situation became critical. However, the 4-man staffing of Engine 3 proved vital at that moment—FF Kennedy was able to knock down the advancing flames, clearing a path for Eager and Coulter to safely evacuate the second occupant.

The team’s actions on that morning were commended for their bravery, teamwork, and commitment to saving lives.
