Armed Man Shot by Saginaw Police Officer During Welfare Check

SAGINAW, Texas - A Saginaw police officer shot an armed man Saturday morning after authorities say the man advanced toward officers with what appeared to be a rifle during a welfare check.

The shooting happened around 11:26 a.m. Sept. 12 at a home in the 300 block of Asbury Drive.

Saginaw police said officers were dispatched after receiving information that a man at the residence was experiencing a mental health crisis and had attempted to harm himself.

When officers arrived, they encountered the man inside the home armed with what appeared to be a rifle, according to the department.

Police said officers gave the man verbal commands in an attempt to de-escalate the situation. The man then advanced toward officers while holding the rifle, prompting one Saginaw officer to fire his handgun, striking him.

Saginaw Fire Department personnel and Fort Worth Fire Department EMS crews provided medical treatment before the man was taken by ambulance to a local hospital.

His condition was not immediately available.

The Texas Rangers were called to conduct an independent investigation into the officer-involved shooting. Their findings will be presented to the Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney's Office.

Saginaw police will conduct a separate administrative investigation to determine whether department policies and procedures were followed.

Police did not release the identity of the man who was shot or the officer who fired.
