August Hot Month for Events, Exhibits at the Irving Arts Center

The Irving Arts Center, 3333 N. MacArthur Blvd., is sure to amaze visitors this August.

Aug. 2–10 | ‘Bells Are Ringing’

2:30 and 8 p.m. | Dupree Theater | $16–$23
Award-winning ICT MainStage Irving-Las Colinas presents the classic musical by Betty Comden and Adolph Green with music by Jule Styne about a dizzy switchboard operator’s relationship with a variety of clients. The 1950s hit features memorable tunes, and entertains with romance, comedy and a happy ending.

Aug. 4 | Family Funday

2–4 p.m. | Suite 200 | Free
Families find inspiration and make art with supplies and guidance provided by the Arts Center.

Aug. 4 | Art Connection Exhibition Reception and Awards Ceremony

2–4 p.m. | Main Gallery | Free
Enjoy refreshments, view entries and find out the winners of the 13th Annual Art Connection Members Exhibition.

Aug. 5–9 | Cirque Sensation Theatre Camp and Performance: Prepare to Be Amazed!

8 a.m. to 5 p.m. | $198
Over the course of a week, pros from Child’s Play Touring Theatre work with campers ages 7-14 to create, write, produce and perform an original musical theater production. The free performance will be held at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 9 at Carpenter Hall.

Aug. 12–16 | Cirque Sensation Theatre Camp and Performance: The Greatest Show on Earth

8 a.m. to 5 p.m. | $198
Child Play’s second week-long workshop for children ages 7–14 to create, write, produce and perform an original musical theater production. The free performance will be held at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 16 in Carpenter Hall.

Aug. 17 | Dance Performance

8 p.m. | Carpenter Hall | Free
The Charity through Art Foundation will present a Bengali dance program.

Aug. 18 | The Best of Elvis!

4 p.m. | Carpenter Hall l $25–$50
Enjoy the music of Elvis Presley performed by two of the world’s finest tribute artists, Ben Portsmouth and Kraig Parker. Experience the heart pounding 1968 “Comeback Special” featuring Elvis performed by Ben Portsmouth, 2012 winner of the Ultimate Elvis competition in Memphis. Kraig Parker, an Irving native, will follow with his rendition of Elvis in Las Vegas in the 1970s. VIP tickets include pre-show meet and greet with the artists.

13th Annual Art Connection Membership Exhibition

Aug. 3–Sept. 7 | Main Gallery
This annual, non-juried exhibition features works in variety of media created by members judged for cash awards in the three categories: Student/Youth, Non-Professional, and Professional. An overall “Best of Show” prize also will be awarded.

6th Annual Transportation Art Contest: From Rails to Wings: Irving, Texas

Aug. 3–Sep. 29 | Dupree Lobby
The exhibition showcases award-winning entries by Irving students, ages 6–17 based on a different transportation related theme each year. The exhibition is organized in conjunction with the Transportation and Infrastructure Summit, a national conference hosted by the City of Irving.

Kids’ Works 2013

Through Sep. 1 | Focus Gallery
Irving Arts Center presents a showcase of the works created by 2013 summer campers including painting, photography, sculpture and more. Free.

Selections from the Tegge: Circus Archives Collection

Through Sep. 29 | Carpenter Hall Lobby
Included works explore the American circus through lithographs, photographs, banners, memorabilia and historical artifacts. The Tegge Circus Archives has been the life work of owner and curator, Timothy Tegge, a circus performer who made his debut at the age of 3. Free.
