Irving ISD hosted some of the brightest students from across Texas for the Academic Decathlon State Meet for Large Schools February 26 through 28. For the 20th consecutive year, the Nimitz High School Academic Decathlon team placed in the top 10 at state, finishing 10th in a field of 40 teams. Irving High School competed at the state meet for the first time in school history.
Individual medalists for Irving ISD are as follows:
Scholastic Students (GPA 3.0-3.74)
- Aron Mathai (Nimitz) – third in music, third in science
Varsity (GPA up to 2.99)
- Charlie Abrego (Irving) – third in science
- Ryan Shelton (Nimitz) – third in essay
- Seireadan Zipper (Nimitz) – third in economics
Highland Park High School won the event and was also presented the Tom Moseley Award for the highest scoring team in Texas. The team will represent Texas in April at the United States Academic Decathlon National Finals. Coppell High School won second place at the state meet for large schools, followed by Rockwall High School in third.
