Irving ISD Achieves District of Distinction Status for Exceptional Visual Arts Education

Irving Independent School District (ISD) has proudly earned the esteemed title of "District of Distinction" from the Texas Art Education Association (TAEA) for its exceptional commitment to fostering visual arts education within its community. This recognition places Irving ISD among an elite group of only 68 school districts in the state of Texas to achieve this prestigious honor. Notably, Irving ISD is a first-year awardee, further showcasing its rapid ascent in the realm of visual arts education.

The accolade was announced by Sandra Newton, Visual Art Administrators of Texas Division Chair, who emphasized the stringent evaluation process undertaken by the school district's Visual Art programs. These programs diligently adhered to a comprehensive 14-point rubric, submitted materials of the highest caliber, and demonstrated unwavering dedication to promoting the visual arts. Out of over 1,200 districts and learning institutions eligible to apply, Irving ISD emerged as a beacon of excellence, showcasing its commitment to nurturing artistic talents.

Sandra Newton stated, "Over 1,200 districts and learning institutions in Texas were eligible to apply for this prestigious Texas Art Education Association Visual Art Award, 68 districts met the high standards and will receive this outstanding honor indicating their visual art program is in the top 5.5% of Visual Art programs in the state."

As the sponsor of this esteemed award, the Visual Art Administrators of Texas, a division of TAEA, celebrates districts and learning institutions that display exemplary leadership in championing the arts within their districts and communities. This recognition is bestowed upon Visual Art programs that actively engage in TAEA events, promote artistic endeavors, and play a significant role in their local communities.

The award's significance is further underscored by the distinction among repeat awardees. This year's celebration acknowledges 16 Visual Art programs that have earned this remarkable accomplishment for five consecutive years, 12 programs that have achieved a four-peat, 10 programs with a three-peat, and an impressive 12 programs with a two-peat. Additionally, the award welcomes 18 new first-year awardees, including Irving ISD, highlighting the district's exceptional debut in the ranks of elite visual arts programs.

So, what exactly is a "District of Distinction"? The District of Distinction is an annual recognition program initiated by the Texas Art Education Association, administered by the Administration and Supervision division. Its primary objective is to honor school districts that lead the way in advancing visual arts education. The criteria for this accolade are carefully designed to assess districts' active involvement in promoting the arts within their communities, including participation in TAEA events. The rubric takes into account the number of students in the district and allows for specific exemptions. To qualify, a district must meet at least 12 out of the 14 criteria outlined in the rubric.
