American Airlines Customers Raise Nearly $4 Million for Cancer Research

American Airlines has announced that its annual fundraising campaign with Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) has raised almost $4 million for innovative and life-saving cancer research. This marks the most successful fundraising campaign the airline has participated in since joining forces with SU2C in 2016.

SU2C, known for enabling scientific breakthroughs through collaborative, multidisciplinary research teams and investigators, has benefited greatly from American Airlines’ continuous support. Over the seven-year collaboration, American has raised over $20 million for SU2C, contributing to their mission of ensuring every cancer patient becomes a long-term survivor.

The success of this year’s campaign, which began on August 19, can be attributed to the overwhelming support from American Airlines' team members and customers. For every dollar donated, customers received 25 bonus American Airlines AAdvantage miles. Moreover, thanks to Mastercard, donations made using American Airlines AAdvantage Mastercard credit cards were matched with 50 bonus AAdvantage miles per dollar, totaling up to $3 million in donations.

American Airlines Chief Communications and Marketing Officer, Ron DeFeo, expressed gratitude for the generous contributions, stating, “The impact we can make when we unite in the fight against cancer is humbling, and American is honored to be a part of that fight.”

In addition to the fundraising campaign, American Airlines showed support for SU2C through various initiatives. Airline representatives participated in SU2C’s televised fundraising special and reflected on the airline’s commitment to the cause. American team members, whose lives were touched by cancer, were also recognized during Texas Rangers and Chicago Cubs baseball games. These moments allowed both players and the audience to take a moment to acknowledge those affected by cancer.

Rusty Robertson, SU2C co-founder, expressed gratitude, saying, “We are so grateful for the support of American Airlines and their customers, who’ve played a major role in propelling our mission forward… Stand Up To Cancer looks forward to reaching more milestones together.”
