The City of Irving’s Heritage Park has been recognized as a finalist for the 2023 Texas Downtown Association (TXDT) President’s Award in the category of Best Public Improvement for a city with a population of over 50,000 people. The park's transformation from a 1-acre lot to a 2.9-acre space with extensive renovations has earned it this prestigious nomination.
In 2021, after years of renovation work, Heritage Park welcomed back residents with its new and improved features. The park now boasts new lighting, well-designed walking paths, restored historical buildings, and a cutting-edge entertainment stage equipped with a massive 15x20-foot LED screen. The redesign was a collaborative effort, with valuable input from residents shaping the park's final layout. Features such as a playground, designated food truck parking, and meeting spaces for community gatherings were included based on community suggestions. The park has now become an enhanced gathering space in the heart of downtown Irving, allowing visitors to explore the city’s rich history while enjoying new traditions.
Mayor Rick Stopfer expressed his pride in Heritage Park, stating, “Heritage Park represents Irving’s thriving culture and diversity while honoring the city’s legacy.” He further noted that the park has become a central point for the city, hosting various special events throughout the year, including the signature Christmas Tree Lighting, live concerts, and movie screenings.
Irving was one of the 114 entries submitted in 11 different categories from communities all across the state of Texas.
Irving Heritage Park is going up against Georgetown - South Main Arts District, Mesquite - Downtown Mesquite Placemking and Wichita Falls - Better Together Mural.
The winners of the TXDT President’s Award will be revealed on October 25, 2023, during the 2023 Downtown Conference in Nacogdoches, Texas.
