American Airlines Earns a Spot on Dow Jones Sustainability World Index

American Airlines has secured a position on the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World) for the first time, standing out as one of only two passenger airlines featured in the prestigious index. Additionally, the airline has retained its place in the Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index (DJSI North America) for the third consecutive year.

The DJSI World, compiled by S&P Global through the Corporate Sustainability Assessment, showcases global sustainability leaders among the largest 2,500 companies in the S&P Global Broad Market Index. The criteria for selection are based on long-term economic, environmental, and social considerations.

American Airlines CEO Robert Isom expressed gratitude for the recognition, stating, "Inclusion on the DJSI World recognizes our work to improve the reliability of our operation, invest in our team members, and operate more sustainably. We are honored to be recognized for our progress."

The airline's achievements in operational reliability include leading the industry in on-time departures year-to-date and surpassing major U.S. network competitors in completion factor. Moreover, American Airlines achieved a record-high Likelihood to Recommend (LTR) score in 2022, based on approximately 3 million customer surveys.

Highlighting their commitment to team members, American Airlines reached a four-year agreement with its pilots in 2023, delivering over $9 billion in compensation and quality-of-life benefits to its 15,000 pilots. The airline also received a perfect score of 100 on the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s 2023-2024 Corporate Equality Index, a leading survey measuring LGBTQ+ workplace equality.

In terms of sustainability, American Airlines set an industry precedent by establishing the first 2035 carbon intensity target validated by the Science Based Targets initiative. The airline has also entered into an innovative offtake agreement with Texas-based Infinium for an advanced form of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), contributing to efforts in producing SAF from waste carbon dioxide and renewable power.

As part of their commitment to carbon removal, American Airlines became the inaugural customer of Graphyte, a carbon removal startup backed by Breakthrough Energy Ventures. The startup pioneers a cost-effective and energy-efficient method of permanent carbon removal, furthering American Airlines' dedication to sustainable practices in the aviation industry.
