Irving Police Announce DWI Enforcement Initiative for Holidays, Provide Stats on Crashes and Fatalities for 2023

The Irving Police Department’s Christmas and New Year holidays DWI Enforcement Initiative started on December 18, 2023, to help #EndTheStreakTX of daily deaths on Texas roadways. Our DWI unit officers are focused on locating and arresting impaired drivers. The enforcement period will run from December 18 through January 1, 2024. During this time, the participating officers will concentrate their efforts on DWI patrols in high-risk sites and when impaired drivers are on the roadways, causing an increased potential for alcohol-related crashes involving injuries or deaths. The high visibility and enforcement efforts should serve as a warning to those who would drive while impaired.

For 2023, our officers have made over 815 DWI arrests and worked 44 major crash investigations, resulting in 28 fatalities. We have made the following arrests in relation to these investigations: eleven intoxication assaults, four intoxication manslaughters, and one manslaughter.

The Irving Police Department and TxDOT encourage people to #PlanWhileYouCan to avoid the consequences of impaired driving. A person’s abilities, decision-making skills and judgment can diminish while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Consider using a taxi or car service, a designated driver or public transportation as an alternative to driving after drinking.

If you see a suspected drunk driver and you (or a passenger) can do so safely, please call 9-1-1 with the information.
