Record Holiday Returns Expected, Better Business Bureau Advises Consumers

As the holiday season draws to a close, the National Retail Federation predicts a record-breaking return season, anticipating up to $966.6 billion in product returns by the end of the year. With this surge in returns, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) reminds consumers to be aware of store policies, especially in states like Texas where refund and exchange regulations are not mandated by law.

Mechele Agbayani Mills, President and CEO of BBB Serving Central East Texas, acknowledges the inconvenience of returns, emphasizing the importance of understanding a retailer's policy in advance. Mills suggests that familiarity with return policies can significantly reduce stress for consumers.

To facilitate hassle-free returns and exchanges, the BBB provides the following tips:

  1. Read the product warranty: Be aware of the warranty details, as the retailer may not be responsible for defective or damaged products. In some cases, consumers may need to contact the manufacturer directly for refunds, credit, or product replacement.

  2. Monitor the "return clock": Many retailers have specific time frames for returns, usually starting from the date of purchase rather than the receipt of the item. Consumers are advised not to delay the return process.

  3. Understand return policies: Policies for sale, clearance, or "as is" merchandise may differ from regular items. Consumers should be aware of specific policies for different types of merchandise.

  4. Ask about return shipping fees: For online purchases, check return policies to determine if there are any associated shipping fees. Some stores may allow in-store returns for items bought online.

  5. Keep the box and receipt: Some stores require the original packaging for returns, and a receipt may be necessary for processing returns or receiving store credit.

  6. Bring identification: Due to return fraud, retailers may request identification during the return process. For gifts, having the credit card used for the purchase can be helpful.

  7. Consider re-purposing or donating: For non-returnable gifts, consider giving them to someone else, selling them online, or donating them to a local charity.

BBB also reminds businesses to establish a clear written return and exchange policy, ensuring consistency in implementation. Developing a customer-friendly policy can contribute to building loyalty with patrons.
