Standoff in North Abilene Ends in Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting

In a tense situation on Monday, April 29, 2024, just before 9 p.m., officers responded to a report of a weapon discharge in the 1000 block of Grape Street in north Abilene. According to the report, a female had fired a weapon at a family member of the caller, constituting an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Upon arrival, the suspect retreated into her home and barricaded herself inside. Law enforcement established a perimeter around the residence and called in negotiators and SWAT for assistance. After hours of negotiation, the suspect opened the door and fired at the officers, prompting them to return fire. The 44-year-old female suspect was fatally wounded by the officers' return fire and was pronounced deceased at the scene by Justice of the Peace Joiner.

There were no reported injuries among the officers or others involved. In accordance with departmental policy, one officer involved will be placed on administrative leave pending the investigation. The incident is currently under investigation by both local authorities and the Department of Public Safety Texas Rangers.
