By Lillian Hellman. The ruthless, moneyed Southern aristocratic Hubbard family plots a sneaky business deal. Avaricious brothers Oscar and Benjamin need their conniving sister Regina to lend them $75,000 to build a cotton mill. To do so, Regina must first make amends with her estranged husband Horace. When Horace refuses to give Regina the money, Oscar’s son Leo is pressured by his father to steal bonds from the family business. When Regina discovers the treachery, she attempts to blackmail her brothers for a share of the mill while Horace threatens to cut Regina out of the deal by telling everyone he “loaned” the money to Leo. When Horace suffers a heart attack, and Regina refuses to lend aid, he dies before his revealing his willingness to loan money to Leo. Regina forces her brothers to give her a piece of the mill – gaining the financial independence she so desires but losing the family relationships she needs.
