Dallas Cowboys named 'Best Fit' for free agent WR Michael Thomas

The Dallas Cowboys’ wide receiver situation is interesting. CeeDee Lamb is the clear No. 1 while Brandin Cooks is the second option. With the recent release of Michael Gallup, there is an opening for the third receiver position.

Former New Orleans Saints receiver Michael Thomas is looking for a new home. As we look ahead to the Dallas Cowboys schedule, Thomas could slide in and be the perfect fit for The Dallas Cowboys game.

The Ultimate Possession Receiver. The Dallas Cowboys score among the best teams in the league on offense over the last few years. Part of that is due to quarterback Dak Prescott. Part of that has to do with dynamic receivers like Lamb and Cooks.

With the Dallas Cowboys schedule looking like one of the tougher ones in the league, they will need to be dynamic once again. Adding Thomas is a great addition to a Dallas Cowboys game that will likely struggle to run the ball.

At his peak, Thomas was a pass-catching machine. From 2017-2019, he caught 378 passes for 4,375 yards and 23 touchdowns. Some called him the “slant king” because much of the damage done came on quick routes.

Because the Dallas Cowboys score so much through the air, this is the perfect opportunity for Thomas. He may never match his 149-catch season of 2019 but he can do damage on short and intermediate routes if he remains healthy.

The Downside of Thomas. All that said, Thomas hasn’t been the same since 2020. He has been dealing with a litany of injuries since then, suiting up in just 20 total games in the four years since that massive season.

Last year was the healthiest he has looked since dealing with ankle, groin, hamstring, and MCL issues, but even then he suited up in just 10 games. He also didn’t look completely like the Thomas of old.

The Caveats. The Dallas Cowboys wouldn’t be looking for the Thomas of 2019. While that would be nice, he doesn’t have to be the guy anymore. Playing as the third option in the Cowboys offense, he could open up the boundaries by becoming a viable option in the middle of the field.

He would also need to come at a lesser price than he may have in previous years. He signed a one-year, $10 million deal with the Saints last year, which was already a step back from the $19.25 million average salary he had over his five-year extension with the Saints before 2019.

If the Cowboys could land him, Thomas would be the perfect option as a third receiver. He can open up all levels of the field, which would make both Cooks and Lamb all the more dangerous.
