Irving Police Department Offers Citizen Police Academy

The Irving Police Department is accepting applications for its Citizen Police Academy (CPA), an educational program designed to offer the public insight into the department's operations and policies. The CPA aims to foster understanding and open communication between the community and the police.

Each CPA class accommodates up to 25 students and is held twice a year: once in Spring, starting in February, and once in Fall, starting in September. Classes are conducted on Mondays in Spanish and Tuesdays in English from 7 to 10 p.m., with two additional Saturday classes. Participants must attend at least 11 of the 14 sessions to graduate. There is no cost to attend the academy.

The program includes 14 weekly classes, each lasting three hours, featuring both classroom and practical instruction. Topics covered include Criminal Investigations, Defensive Tactics, Domestic Violence, Firearms Training, Gang Unit, Narcotics Investigations, Officer Selection and Training Process, Police Communications, and Tactical Operations. Participants will also tour facilities and have the opportunity to join the patrol "ride-along" program.

Graduates of the CPA will not be trained as police officers or vigilantes. Instead, the academy provides attendees with information to make informed judgments about the Irving Police Department and experience a day in the life of an officer in various fields. Applications are accepted year-round.
