Dallas to Enforce New Ordinance on Unregistered Vehicles Parked on City Streets Starting August 19

On Monday, August 19, 2024, the Dallas Transportation and Public Works Department will begin enforcing the City’s ordinance regarding motor vehicles parked on city streets with expired or no registration. This ordinance was introduced in response to residents' concerns about unregistered vehicles, many of which were either being repaired or were damaged, leading to vehicle fluids flowing into the city’s stormwater drains and debris being left on streets and sidewalks.

City staff conducted investigations and found that some public streets were being used as long-term storage for these vehicles, creating a public safety hazard. To address this issue, a new ordinance was proposed to the Dallas City Council.

On Wednesday, August 14, the Dallas City Council approved the ordinance, making it a violation to park a motor vehicle on a public street, highway, or alley with expired or no registration. The specific violations include:

  • Vehicles that do not display a current registration.
  • Vehicles with a registration expired for two months or longer.
  • Vehicles with a temporary license plate expired for 30 days or longer.

The Parking Management and Enforcement Division of the Transportation and Public Works Department will issue warning citations from Monday, August 19, 2024, through Monday, September 3, 2024. After this period, regular citations will be issued. The fine for these violations is $45.
