Irving ISD Announces Progress Amid Accountability Rating Dispute

Irving Independent School District (ISD) has reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and educational excellence despite ongoing litigation that has prevented the Texas Education Agency (TEA) from releasing official A-F accountability ratings. This legal uncertainty has complicated the district’s ability to provide clear performance metrics, but Irving ISD is focused on sharing insights and progress with its community.

The district has been navigating several challenges since the 2021-2022 school year, including disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and a major redesign of the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) test. The redesigned STAAR test, which was introduced in the 2022-2023 school year, has made it difficult to compare current performance with previous years. As a result, the district has decided not to release predicted letter grades for its campuses, as these are still in dispute.

Despite these challenges, internal predictions for Irving ISD indicate that the district has consistently been projected to receive a C rating under the redesigned A-F accountability system for both the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 school years. This rating reflects the district's overall performance and efforts to adapt to the new testing standards.

Irving ISD reports a positive trend in student performance, with incremental improvements observed over the past two years. The district's focus on high-quality instruction and targeted support for students is evident in several key areas:

  • Elementary Schools: There has been a notable increase in the number of students performing at grade level, particularly in Math and Reading. This growth is attributed to enhanced instructional strategies and support systems implemented across elementary campuses.

  • Secondary Schools: Similar improvements have been observed in secondary schools, with particular advancements in School Progress and Closing the Gaps domains. High schools in the district are projected to exceed the district's goal of 65% College, Career, and Military Readiness (CCMR) standards, reflecting significant progress in preparing students for post-graduation success.

“Our schools are making measurable progress in all three key domains—Student Achievement, School Progress, and Closing the Gaps,” said Magda A. Hernández, Superintendent of Schools. “These successes are a testament to the commitment to excellence of our students, teachers, and staff. I am proud to see the results of higher quality instruction, additional support for our students, and a high-achievement culture in action.”

In addition to academic improvements, the district’s recent Climate Survey results highlight strong support from students and parents, who recognize the high expectations set by teachers. Irving ISD aims to provide a comprehensive education that extends beyond standardized tests, focusing on equipping students with essential skills, knowledge, and confidence for success in various aspects of life.

“We are dedicated to creating an ambitious teaching and learning environment for every student,” Hernández added. “Our goal is not just to prepare students for tests but to help them reach their full potential in all areas, whether mastering academic subjects, developing artistic talents, or contributing to their community.”

Irving ISD remains committed to continuous improvement and appreciates the ongoing support from the community as it works to empower students and enhance educational programs. The district’s proactive approach underscores its dedication to fostering an environment where every student can thrive and excel.
