Fort Worth Launches Commercial Drone Deliveries

Fort Worth has become the first major metropolitan U.S. city to introduce commercial drone deliveries. The service is currently available for deliveries from select Walmart stores in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, enabling residents to receive food, medicine, and household items at their doorstep within approximately 10 minutes.

How It Works
The drone service operates under Advanced Air Mobility (AAM), utilizing innovative aircraft such as electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicles. These unmanned aerial systems (UAS) are remotely controlled, providing quick and efficient delivery services.

Safety and Privacy Measures
Safety is a primary concern with extensive flight testing conducted and a Part 135 Air Carrier Certificate obtained from the FAA. Drones are required to meet high safety standards. Privacy is also safeguarded, as drones are equipped with low-resolution cameras only for navigation purposes, without live feeds or photographs.

Environmental and Economic Benefits
The drone delivery service offers significant environmental advantages, using less energy than typical household appliances and helping to reduce road congestion by minimizing vehicle trips for deliveries.

City of Fort Worth’s Involvement
As the service rolls out, Fort Worth will implement policies and local zoning laws to manage takeoff and landing sites and drone equipment storage.
