Fort Worth Prepares for Major Population Boom with Transit Improvements and High-Speed Rail Plans

The City of Fort Worth is preparing for significant population growth, with projections indicating an additional 4 million residents by 2050. This increase will transform Fort Worth into the anchor of a megacity with more than 12 million people, making it the third-largest metropolitan area in the United States.

Recently, Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker and Arlington Mayor Jim Ross participated in a panel discussion alongside Trinity Metro CEO Richard Andreski and North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) Transportation Director Michael Morris. The discussion centered on the rapid population growth and the necessity for regional transit solutions, including a high-speed rail connection to Houston.

On August 12, Fort Worth city staff met with representatives from Trinity Metro, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), and NCTCOG to discuss transit improvement initiatives along East Lancaster Avenue (State Highway 180), stretching from Pine Street to South Handley Drive. This meeting was part of the ongoing efforts to address potential transit enhancements along the East Lancaster Corridor, a key element of the Eastside Transportation Plan.

The plan envisions the development of a form-based zoning code to encourage transit-oriented development and create walkable destinations along the corridor. Representatives from the Fort Worth Economic Development and Development Services departments were present to explore how this zoning code could be effectively implemented. Kelly Porter, from Fort Worth’s Transportation & Public Works Department, is leading the study, while NCTCOG oversees the overall improvement of the roadway on East Lancaster, a TxDOT right-of-way.

These initiatives are part of broader efforts under the "Moving a Million – Master Transportation Plan" and the "Reimagine Fort Worth 2050 Comprehensive Plan," aimed at addressing the city's growing needs and improving regional connectivity.
