James Grant

On September 6, 2024, at approximately 7:55 a.m., Dallas Police responded to a car crash in the 700 block of E. Ledbetter Drive in Oak Cliff. Upon arrival, officers found that a 14-year-old male had been struck by a vehicle. The driver stopped and remained at the scene.

According to the preliminary investigation, the driver and a passenger, 47-year-old James Grant, got into an argument while traveling south on Marsalis Avenue. During the altercation, Grant began struggling with the driver and assaulted them. The conflict continued as they turned east onto Ledbetter, with Grant reaching across the driver, which caused the vehicle to veer off the road and strike the teen, who had been walking in the grass.

Grant then stole property from the driver and fled the scene. The driver called 911 for assistance. Officers later located and arrested Grant. He was charged with felony murder, as his actions during the commission of a felony led to the teen's death.

Grant's bond was set at $750,000, but because he was on parole, TDC (Texas Department of Criminal Justice) has asked for him to held.

The investigation is ongoing and is being documented under case numbers 136918-2024 and 136919-2024.
