Dallas Man Sentenced to 35 Years for Mistaken Identity Shooting

Jose Cobos

Jose Cobos, 39, was sentenced to 35 years in prison after being found guilty of murder in connection with a shooting incident that occurred at a Dallas apartment complex. The case was prosecuted by Abigail Peak, with Doug Millican serving as the second chair, and Christopher Frosch as the DA investigator.

The shooting unfolded when the victim, who had recently moved into the complex with her new boyfriend following a domestic violence relationship, returned to her apartment late one night. Cobos, who was supposed to meet his ex-girlfriend at the complex that evening, mistakenly targeted the victim, believing her to be his former partner. He fired multiple shots into the victim’s truck. As the victim’s boyfriend drove away, Cobos pursued them, continuing to shoot.

Initially, investigators suspected the victim’s ex-boyfriend, who had made recent threats, might be involved. However, it was later confirmed he was in another city at the time of the shooting. Cobos's ex-girlfriend subsequently turned him in to the authorities.

Cobos's defense argued that he was at a party during the shooting and that the victim’s ex-boyfriend was responsible. However, surveillance video of Cobos’s truck at the scene, cell phone location data, and the discovery of the murder weapon at Cobos’s home led the jury to reject the defense’s claims. Cobos was found guilty and sentenced to 35 years in prison.
