On August 11, 2024, Dallas Police responded to a call at approximately 11:45 a.m. in the 11500 block of Plano Road, where they discovered 48-year-old Shaun Smith dead at the scene. A subsequent investigation determined that Smith had been murdered.
Four suspects have been arrested and charged with Capital Murder in connection with Smith's death:
- Byron Louis Nelson, 56, was arrested on September 17, 2024, by U.S. Marshals in Longview, Texas, and is currently being held at the Gregg County Jail.
- Jared Russell, 27, was arrested on August 28, 2024, by the Dallas Police Fugitive Unit and is currently in custody at the Dallas County Jail.
- Deanna Palmer, 23, was also arrested on August 28, 2024, by the Dallas Police Fugitive Unit and is being held in the Dallas County Jail.
- Marissa Mitchell, 35, was apprehended on August 30, 2024, in Austin, Texas, by the Austin Police Department and is now in the Dallas County Jail.
