Illegal Alien Gets 39 Years in Dallas for Stabbing Girlfriend 10 Times With Screwdriver

DALLAS - A 29-year-old man has been sentenced to 39 years in prison for stabbing his girlfriend 10 times with a flathead screwdriver, leaving her blind in one eye and with a collapsed lung.

Gregory Escobar-Liendo was convicted of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon causing serious bodily injury involving family violence. He was sentenced July 23.

According to prosecutors, Escobar-Liendo and the victim met through a mutual friend and began dating. Their relationship lasted about a month before the attack.

The night before the assault, the woman went to a club with a friend without Escobar-Liendo. Prosecutors said he sent them multiple text messages during the night threatening to kill the victim.

The following morning, Escobar-Liendo went to the woman's apartment and stabbed her 10 times with a flathead screwdriver, according to court records.

The woman suffered wounds to her eye, ribs and back. The attack caused her to completely lose vision in one eye and left her with a collapsed lung.

Her friend found her lying in a pool of blood on the bathroom floor. Dallas Fire-Rescue transported her to Parkland Hospital for treatment.

Escobar-Liendo fled after the attack and attempted to hide by jumping from a bridge into a creek bed, according to prosecutors. He broke his leg in the fall and subsequently called 911.

During the call, prosecutors said Escobar-Liendo reported that he had committed a homicide and requested an ambulance for his injured leg. The woman, however, survived the attack.

Escobar-Liendo later offered a different account, portraying himself as the victim and claiming the woman had electrocuted him. He also claimed that after fleeing, someone followed him in a vehicle and attempted to run him over, resulting in his broken leg.

Court records and prosecutors attributed the leg injury to his fall from the bridge.

Authorities also identified Escobar-Liendo as being unlawfully present in the United States.  He is now filing to appeal the conviction.

Dallas County prosecutors David Isaacks and Rachel Champion handled the case. DA investigator JD Williams and victim advocate Sharon Counts assisted. The Dallas Police Department investigated the assault.
