Toronto's price for Halladay is too high
According to mlb.com, "there was a point on Thursday when the Rangers thought they had a real chance at trading for Blue Jays pitcher Roy Halladay, with a source saying a deal was "very close." But that is no longer the case."
The biggest issue is what Toronto is asking in return. The wish list includes Rangers rookie left-hander Derek Holland. Who wouldn't want Holland at this point? He pitched a two-hit game on Thursday night to lead the Rangers victory over division rival Seattle. It wasn't just a victory, Holland dominated as he defeated the Mariners, 7-1, allowing one run on two hits and a walk while striking out 10.
The Blue Jays also want first baseman Justin Smoak, outfielder Julio Borbon and another minor leaguer.
Another option presented would have the Rangers sending pitcher Tommy Hunter instead of Derek Holland.
The Rangers do want Halladay, badly, but not at the cost of losing pitchers that have been part of the success of this season. They should stick to their guns and only make available minor league players. Granted, Smoak, Borbon, even Beavan have a major upside, but Halladay is not just your everyday pitcher.
At this time, according to those familiar with the discussions, the trade negotiations are somewhere between dead and on life-support.
All this means is that both teams continue to talk. We will see. Less than 3 hours to go until the trade deadline.
