The Irving Police Athletic League continues to produce championship boxers with this most recent crowning jewel of a competitor. During the second week of February 2010, George Rincon (18) completed a multi-fight open invitational competition in Cincinnati, Ohio, at the 2010 Under-19 National Championship Tournament. George won all his bouts and earned the National Championship title. That national title, and his exemplary skill, qualifies him to represent USA Boxing in international competition at the 2010 Youth World Championships to be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, later this year.
Following his success in the Ohio tournament, George competed in the 2010 Texas State Golden Gloves held March 3rd through 6th in Fort Worth. He competed as the defending champion in the light weight division (141lbs). George fought every night of the tournament, winning every match. He fought boxers from Austin, San Antonio, Rio Grand Valley, and the Lubbock area. As the 2010 State Golden Glove Champion, George will advance to the National Golden Gloves Championship in North Little Rock, Arkansas, May 5-9, 2010.
George has been active with the Irving P.A.L. since 2003 when he was 11 years old. Since that time he has excelled in his chosen sport of boxing and has earned several state, regional, and national titles. Worth noting is the fact that he has not lost a bout in a local or state tournament in the last five years. In October 2009 George placed 2nd in the 2009 National PAL competition. In January he won the 2010 Dallas Golden Gloves in his weight/age category.
A major part of his success can be attributed to a strong support by his parents and brother as well as his friends, coaches, and peers at the Irving PAL. George’s younger brother, Alex, is also in the IPAL boxing program, and their father has been a coach with the program for many years. George says that one of his goals is to be a participant in the 2012 Olympics in London. He views the upcoming tournament in Azerbaijan as a major step toward his Olympic dreams by gaining experience with international competitors.
The Irving Police Athletic League (PAL) was incorporated in 1992 as a nonprofit organization by volunteer police officers and private citizens. The goal of the PAL is to help kids develop self-esteem, discipline, and mental courage through a regimented program of physical fitness and exposure to positive role models in a non-threatening atmosphere. PAL is available to boys and girls between the ages 8-18. The primary activities sponsored by PAL are boxing, wrestling, basketball, and soccer.
The boxing and wrestling programs run year round while the basketball and soccer programs are seasonal. The Irving PAL building (gym) is located at 1550 Rock Island Rd., Irving, Texas, and is normally open Monday through Friday from 5p.m. to 8p.m. for boxing lessons. During the summer, the gym is open Monday through Friday from noon till 8pm.
