USFL and XFL Announce Intention to Merge, Creating New Spring Football Powerhouse

On September 28, 2023, the United States Football League (USFL) and the XFL revealed their plans to merge. The proposed merger is contingent on receiving customary regulatory approvals, and if it goes through, it will create a new league aimed at setting high standards based on the recent seasons of both the USFL and the XFL.

The XFL currently consists of 8 teams in Washington DC, Seatlle, St. Louis, Las Vegas, Houston, Arlington, San Antonio and Orlando.  The Arlington Renegades were the league champions in 2023. 

The USFL also has 8 teams in Birmingham, Houston, Memphis, Michigan, New Jersey, New Orleans, Philadelphia and Pittsburg. The Birmingham Stallions won the 2023 USFL Championship.

This merger represents a significant milestone in the world of professional spring football, as it brings together substantial resources and capabilities to foster future growth. The collaboration also intends to further the development of players, coaches, and staff involved in the newly formed league.
