Woman Accused of Choking Girlfriend, Spitting Blood in Officer's Face at Lewisville Motel 6

LEWISVILLE, Texas - A woman accused of attacking and choking her girlfriend during an alcohol-fueled disturbance at a Lewisville motel later spat blood and saliva into an officer's face while resisting police, according to arrest affidavits.

Lewisville police responded around 5:17 p.m. Sept. 7 to the Motel 6 at 1705 Lakepointe Drive after receiving reports of multiple people fighting near the swimming pool. Dispatchers were told someone was bleeding from the face and that people involved might be intoxicated.

Officers encountered Daizja Linique Braden-Gumbs of Garland, TX, at the motel. According to an officer's report, Braden-Gumbs was yelling, waving her arms and attempting to walk away while officers questioned her.

Police said she refused commands to sit down and pulled away when officers attempted to detain her. During the struggle, she allegedly squirmed and tucked her arms underneath her body to prevent officers from handcuffing her.

Officers eventually restrained Braden-Gumbs and allowed paramedics to evaluate facial injuries she had sustained before police arrived.

The report states Braden-Gumbs showed signs of intoxication, including slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, an unsteady gait and a strong odor of alcohol.

Girlfriend describes fight near motel pool

Police interviewed Lavetris Lewis, who told officers she and Braden-Gumbs had been in an on-and-off romantic relationship for approximately a year. The two had moved from Garland and were staying in Room 151 at the motel, according to the report.

Lewis told police she had been at the motel pool since about 3 p.m. Around 5 p.m., she knocked on the room window for Braden-Gumbs to bring her a cup of tequila but received no response.

Lewis went inside and found Braden-Gumbs stumbling in a hallway. According to the report, the motel manager also noticed Braden-Gumbs stumbling, became concerned and called 911.

Lewis said she followed Braden-Gumbs outside and watched her jump over the pool gate before swimming approximately two laps. Concerned about Braden-Gumbs swimming while intoxicated, Lewis entered the pool area.

After getting out of the water, Gumbs approached a group of women and confronted one of them, accusing the woman of being romantically involved with Lewis, according to the report.

Lewis told police she stepped between them in an attempt to defuse the confrontation.

Braden-Gumbs then struck Lewis multiple times with a closed fist in the head, mouth and neck areas, according to the report.

Lewis told investigators Braden-Gumbs also grabbed her from behind and placed her in a chokehold. As the pressure increased, Lewis said she began to panic and tapped Gumbs to signal that she wanted to be released.

Lewis did not lose consciousness and told officers she did not initially feel pain, which she attributed to adrenaline.

Two women who witnessed the confrontation corroborated Lewis' account to officers, according to the report.

During the altercation, Braden-Gumbs fell face-first onto concrete near the pool, causing the facial injuries and bleeding officers observed when they arrived.

Police say blood and saliva struck officer's face

Because Braden-Gumbs continued resisting, officers placed her in a WRAP restraint device before transporting her to the Lewisville Jail.

According to a separate probable cause affidavit, Braden-Gumbs continued resisting as four officers attempted to place her into the back seat of a patrol vehicle and secure her with a seat belt.

Police said Braden-Gumbs leaned her head backward and spat into the face of a field training officer.

Because Braden-Gumbs was already bleeding from her mouth, the officer was exposed to both saliva and blood. The affidavit states the blood and saliva struck below the officer's right eye, the side of his nose and inside his right ear.

Officers eventually secured Braden-Gumbs in the vehicle and transported her to jail without further incident.

Braden-Gumbs faces charges of harassment of a public servant and resisting arrest, search or transport stemming from her interaction with officers.

A records check also revealed two active Collin County warrants for Braden-Gumbs, one for assault of a family or household member by impeding breath or circulation and another for assault causing bodily injury to a family member. Police confirmed the warrants before booking her.

An officer also requested an emergency protective order and submitted a referral to Denton County Friends of the Family following the incident.
