Plano Murder Suspect Dies After Allegedly Firing at DPS Troopers, Crashing on I-35 in Valley View

VALLEY VIEW, Texas - A suspect wanted in connection with a Plano murder investigation died Monday morning after allegedly opening fire on Texas Department of Public Safety troopers and leading authorities on a pursuit that ended with a crash and standoff on Interstate 35.

Valley View police said they were called shortly after 10 a.m. Sept. 14 to assist with a pursuit traveling north on I-35 from Denton County.

According to preliminary information released by the department, a DPS trooper attempted to stop the suspect, who was wanted in connection with a murder investigation being handled by Plano police.

Authorities said the suspect opened fire on DPS troopers before fleeing north on I-35.

The pursuit continued into Valley View, where the suspect's vehicle crashed on the interstate.

A large law enforcement response followed, with officers surrounding the crashed vehicle as a standoff developed.

During the standoff, the suspect's vehicle caught fire. The suspect was later confirmed dead at the scene.

Authorities have not released the suspect's identity or provided information about the Plano homicide that preceded the pursuit. Officials also have not said how the suspect died or what caused the vehicle to catch fire.

Valley View police said there was no continuing threat to the public.

The department assisted with the incident but is not leading the investigation. Texas DPS and the Plano Police Department are handling the pursuit, shooting and underlying murder investigation.
